Growing up, Steve Mcqueen’s Le Mans (1971) was a piece of unforgettable cinema history that I am obsessed with to this day. Filmed using authentic footage and automobiles during the annual 24-hour endurance race at Le Mans, France, in 1970, this fast-paced drama follows Michael Delaney (Steve McQueen), a Porsche driver haunted by the memory of an accident at the previous year's race in which a competing driver was killed.

The prominent competitor to the Porsche 917 featured heavily throughout the film was the livid Ferrari 512S. This legendary Ferrari was a specialized race car built for the Manufacturers' World Championship, featuring a 5.0-liter V12 engine and a fiberglass body. The sleek wedge like design was intended to challenge their rival Porsche, and they succeeded when Mario Andretti won the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1970 using a modified 512.

3D Scan to Re-Mesh
After 3D Scanning the 1/64 model, it was necessary to remove noise and make a airtight structured mesh. I cleaned and scaled the scan to align with an existing RC Chassis, then sculpt in the fine details like the the intakes/exhausts, headlights, mirrors, on the basic geometry to give the model its face and personality back.

Part 2. Engine Revealer
Next, I wanted to pay tribute to the Hot wheels, the 512M Mario Andretti raced and the cars featured in Le Man by 3D printing a custom remote control model and adding a mechanical hinge on the tail end of the car to reveal the 5.0-liter V12 engine.
